Uniboard

Privacy policy

Uniboard privacy policy.

Effective and last updated:

Uniboard is an offline Unicode character and emoji explorer and keyboard for iPhone and iPad. After an optional language download, it can also convert Japanese and Mandarin typing on your device. It is published by Kitta Ltd, trading as Kitta Co.

Kitta Ltd does not collect your typing, searches or inspected text from Uniboard. The app has no accounts, advertisements, tracking, analytics SDK or AI service. Japanese and Mandarin conversion happens on your device. Uniboard’s keyboard code does not send your typing to a server or initiate language downloads; language downloads are performed by the containing Uniboard app. Direct Typing, search and inspection work without Full Access. Optional language and font downloads and website visits involve delivery providers, and voluntary support messages provide the information you choose to send, as explained below.

Keyboard input and search

The Unicode release, development draft and emoji catalogs are bundled with the app. Character and emoji searches run on your device. Entering a search in the keyboard edits a query kept inside the keyboard extension; it does not write the query into the active text field.

When you select a character or emoji, the keyboard inserts its original Unicode scalar or complete sequence into the active field. Uniboard does not send your typing, queries or inserted text to Kitta Ltd or an app-operated server. The app that receives your inserted text handles that text under its own privacy policy.

The search index is built from the bundled Unicode catalog and cached on your device. It is not an index of your typing or search history. Local index-build logs record timing and size metrics, not search contents.

Japanese and Mandarin typing

Japanese — Romaji and Mandarin Chinese — Pinyin turn what you type into choices on your device, using language data the Uniboard app has downloaded. Mandarin offers Simplified Chinese vocabulary choices. Uniboard’s keyboard code does not send your typing to a server or initiate language downloads; language downloads are performed by the containing Uniboard app. Conversion does not use an online or AI service. Japanese conversion does not learn from your typing. Language settings do not save your unfinished input, the active input mode or a typing history.

Downloaded languages need Full Access only so the keyboard can read the language files that the app shares with it on your device. Full Access is not used to send your typing anywhere. With Full Access off, the keyboard offers Direct Typing only, and Direct Typing works normally. For setup steps, see Type Japanese and Mandarin on the support page.

Optional language downloads

Language data is not downloaded unless you choose Download in the app’s Languages settings. The Uniboard app, not the keyboard, then requests static resource files: the Japanese dictionary from codeload.github.com, or the Mandarin vocabulary and character mapping files from raw.githubusercontent.com. No conversion dictionary is bundled with the app or keyboard. The app includes only license notices, download details and three small My Words example files.

GitHub and its delivery providers receive ordinary network request information, including your IP address, and the file requested, to deliver it under GitHub’s privacy statement. Downloads are not anonymous. Uniboard does not attach your typing, My Words entries or configuration to these requests. The downloader uses a separate session without cookies, saved credentials or a URL cache, and adds no account or analytics. Platform-generated request information may still be sent. This policy does not set GitHub’s retention periods.

Each file is checked against its expected size and SHA-256 hash before use. Conversion then uses only data on your device; for Mandarin, the app builds a local dictionary from the downloaded files and keeps it with the download.

You can remove an installed language download without deleting My Words. Removing it turns that language off. Files still in use by a keyboard may be retained until its readers release them, so disk space may not be recovered immediately. Language downloads are not excluded from device backups, so backups may include them under your Apple settings.

Data on your device

Favorites, recent entries, symbol pages, configured keys, preferences and scratchpad text are stored locally. App-authored preferences, configured keys and explicit Favorites are shared with the keyboard through on-device storage. With Full Access off, keyboard favorite edits remain pending locally; optional Full Access lets those edits return to Saved. Pages configured in the app also reach the keyboard through on-device shared storage. Recent entries remain local to their collection. My Words dictionaries and language settings are also stored locally. Nothing is synced to a developer-operated service.

You can remove favorites and clear scratchpad text within the app. Recent entries are limited to the latest 60 distinct characters and 60 distinct emoji in each collection. Deleting Uniboard through iOS removes its local app data. Copies you paste into other apps and device backups remain under your control; backups may include app data under your Apple settings.

Optional font downloads

Extra Unicode fonts are off by default. Core search, the bundled catalogs and typing work without a network connection. If you choose Download in the companion app, it requests static font files from GitHub’s release-file delivery service for font packs, original or shared files from the Google Fonts repository on raw.githubusercontent.com, or available individual styles from Google’s fonts.gstatic.com. The font catalog, metadata and license notices are bundled, and name search is local; the download identifies the selected font file, not your search text. Requests do not contain your typing, searches, inspected text, favorites, scratchpad text, custom key text, configuration or an app account identifier. The downloader uses a separate session without cookie storage, saved credentials or a URL cache, and adds no app-specific authentication or analytics. Platform-generated request information may still be sent.

Google, GitHub and their delivery providers receive ordinary technical request information, such as an IP address and the requested file, to deliver and protect downloads under Google’s privacy policy and GitHub’s privacy statement. GitHub exposes aggregate asset-download counts; Uniboard has no download analytics SDK and Kitta Ltd does not receive individual download logs from the app.

Each font is checked against its expected size and SHA-256 hash and validated as a font before use. The keyboard reads verified local files without Full Access and never downloads them itself. Fonts are used only for previews while the option is on; they do not change text inserted into other apps or install system-wide fonts. Turning previews off keeps downloaded files on your device. Optional Unicode and emoji font packs and the Google/custom font library use separate storage, with different removal and backup behavior.

Removing an optional Unicode or emoji font pack deletes its downloaded files when removal succeeds; bundled fonts remain. Uniboard requests that iOS exclude the font-pack download folder from backups. Google Fonts downloads and added custom fonts use a separate local library without that backup-exclusion setting, so backups may include those files. Removing a font from this library stops using that entry but retains old font bytes so existing app and keyboard views can finish reading them safely. There is currently no automatic cleanup of these retired files, and removal does not immediately free their disk space. Other entries, including an independently imported copy of the same font, are kept.

Text preview and inspection

The keyboard uses surrounding text made available by iOS to show its text preview; it does not have unrestricted access to your whole document. Inspect Text and Copy Image use only the excerpt shown in the preview, not hidden text elsewhere in the document.

Inspection takes a temporary snapshot of that excerpt and analyzes characters, code points and Unicode normalization on your device. It does not send the excerpt to Kitta Ltd or an app-operated server, or automatically change the document you are typing into. Closing the inspection panel clears its temporary snapshot. Explicitly copying an inspection result creates a separate copy under your control.

Configuration files

You can export your configuration to a TOML file and choose where to save or share it. The file can contain settings, editable layouts and pages, custom key text, favorites, font references and rules, enabled language modes, language preferences, references identifying language downloads, and Copy Image colors and scale. Favorites and custom key text are included and may be personal. The My Words collection, language dictionary files, typing history, scratchpad contents and font files are not included. Copy Image colors and scale chosen in the keyboard without Full Access are not included in the app’s export.

Exporting does not send the file to a Kitta server. Your chosen Files or sharing destination may store or cloud-sync the file under its own policies. Remove exported copies from those destinations when you no longer need them; deleting Uniboard does not remove copies you shared elsewhere.

In My Words, you can export a dictionary to a file and import dictionary files you choose. Dictionaries can contain personal custom text. Removing a dictionary in the app, or deleting Uniboard, does not erase copies you saved or shared elsewhere.

An import is validated and reviewed before you confirm replacement. Missing sections reset to defaults rather than merge. Import does not download fonts; missing-font rules are retained with fallback. Uniboard keeps the previous configuration locally for Undo Last Configuration Change after an import or editor apply. Undo also replaces changes made since that import or apply. Local configuration and recovery copies remain on your device until replaced or removed with the app.

Settings → Configuration → Edit Configuration loads your current configuration as editable TOML. Editing and validation happen locally; the draft is held in memory, is not sent to Kitta Ltd or an app-operated server, and is not saved for reopening. Validate does not change your configuration. Apply validates the current text again and opens a review before you confirm replacement. Confirmed changes use the same local configuration storage and recovery as imports; discarding edits leaves the configuration unchanged.

Clipboard and permissions

When you choose a copy action, Uniboard writes the selected character, complete emoji sequence, scratchpad text, inspected preview text, code-point labels, available NFC, NFD, NFKC or NFKD normalized text, or UTF-8 or UTF-16 hexadecimal text to the system clipboard. The encoding copies are readable hex text, not binary data. Copy Image writes a rendered PNG of the shown excerpt using your chosen colors and scale. This is a picture, not editable text, and can be pasted only where images are accepted. Other apps may access clipboard content under iOS rules. Uniboard does not continuously read or monitor the clipboard.

Full Access is optional. It lets the keyboard read downloaded Japanese and Mandarin language files shared by the app. It also enables local favorite and Copy Image preference writes from the keyboard back to the app, keyboard clipboard copy actions (including inspector text, code-point labels, normalization forms, UTF-8 and UTF-16 hex text, and Copy Image), and light iPhone haptics. Full Access is not used to send your typing anywhere, and it does not enable typing or search collection. Direct Typing, search and inspection work without it. App settings and downloaded font previews reach the keyboard without Full Access. Uniboard does not request location, camera, microphone, contacts or advertising permissions. iOS controls which text fields and apps allow a third-party keyboard.

Support messages

If you voluntarily contact Kitta Ltd, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your email address and message. We use it to answer your request and resolve the issue. Please do not include passwords, private documents or sensitive typing in support messages.

This website and external services

This policy and the Uniboard website are hosted on Cloudflare Pages. The site uses no analytics, tracking scripts, advertising cookies or third-party fonts. Cloudflare may process IP addresses and ordinary network request information to deliver and protect the website, as described in Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

If you open an external link, the destination receives the request information needed to serve its page and its own privacy policy applies. Apple manages App Store distribution, system services and device backups under its policies and your settings.

Children

Kitta Ltd does not collect typing, searches or inspected text from children or other users through Uniboard. The optional downloads, website delivery and voluntary support described above also apply. It has no messaging, user accounts or social network.

Retention and deletion

App data stays locally until you remove it, replace it or delete the app, subject to the recent-entry limits and temporary inspection snapshot described above. Font-pack removal deletes its downloaded files when successful; removing Google/custom library entries retains retired file bytes as explained above. Removing a language download keeps My Words; files still in use by a keyboard may be retained until its readers release them, and disk space may not be recovered immediately. Language downloads are not excluded from device backups. Deleting the app removes its local app data, while backups must be managed separately. Exported configuration and dictionary files, clipboard copies, content pasted into other apps and device backups must be managed separately. Delivery providers handle request information under their linked privacy policies; this policy does not set their retention periods. To ask about deletion of information you sent in a support message, contact the privacy address below.

Your choices

You can decline language downloads and use Direct Typing, or remove an installed language download without deleting My Words; removal may not free disk space immediately. You can decline font downloads, remove optional font packs, remove Google/custom fonts from active use, or turn off Extra Unicode Fonts to stop previews using them while keeping the files. Removing a Google/custom library entry does not immediately delete its retained font bytes or recover their disk space. You can revoke Full Access in iOS keyboard settings; Direct Typing, search and inspection still work, while downloaded Japanese and Mandarin typing needs Full Access. Copy and export actions happen only when you choose them. You can remove favorites, custom text or My Words dictionaries, clear the scratchpad, and delete the app to remove its local data. Manage shared copies and backups separately through their apps, destinations or Apple settings.

Changes and contact

We will update this policy and the app’s privacy disclosures if its data practices change. The date above identifies this revision.
